Grace upon Grace, Like the Waves on the Shore

Grace upon grace, like the  waves on the shore,
Always enough, always more,
Grace upon grace, like the waves on the shore,
All that we need is ours from the Lord.

“Grace upon Grace” which is one my very favorite songs was written by one of my favorite singers Gordon Jensen. I recently discovered and have been enjoying his music online.

Oh how indescribably rich is God’s grace. Limitless, matchless, unfathomable, undeserved are all words that have been used to describe it. Using the letters of the word grace it is described as “God’s riches at Christ’s expense.” Another definition for grace is “God’s unmerited favor.” And that it most certainly is. As another Gordon Jensen songs says, “I should have been crucified, I should have suffered and died, I should have hung on the cross in disgrace, but Jesus God’s Son took my place.”  That’s total, unselfish love.

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:28-29). This verse which is one of my favorites sums up the depths of God’s love for us.

So does the cross. One time in a Bible bookstore, I came across a poster with a picture of Jesus on the cross. It said, “I asked Jesus, “How much do you love me? He said this much and then stretched out his arms and died.” I contemplated it for the longest time filled with awed emotion and gratitude. As Dottie Rambo so poetically puts it, “If that isn’t love the ocean is dry, there’s no stars in the sky and the sparrow can’t fly. If that isn’t love, then heaven’s a myth, there’s no feeling like this. If that isn’t love.”

The first verse of “Grace upon Grace” says, “Like the ocean in waves ever sweeping the shore, to his children comes the grace of the Lord. Like the mighty sea so deep and so wide, his grace to us is an endless supply.” The second verse says, “In daylight or midnight the waves touch the shore, one on another they faithfully pour, summer or winter they never subside, so our gracious father provides.”  If you have never experienced God’s grace invite him to make his home in you and reveal it to you. Whatever you are going through right now, God’s unlimited grace is there to see you through to victory.
